MORE conversations about language...
The conversation about language is not letting up this month... We chose to discussed these past few weeks how language can be used as a tool to engage communities in organization and activism; this week, we will take a look at how language is used to distract, divide and confuse. Specifically, we will be examining the most recent incarnation of the 'New Black' ideology, and the works which have been produced from it.
While Michelle Alexander spoke of 'the new jim crow' in relation to, for instance, the 'school to prison pipeline; the current wave of events certainly prove that 'ol jim crow never left. The difference between then and now is mass access to media, and while more and more people are collectively organizing (and using social media to do it), some high-profile individuals are performing the will of their masters, and conveying messages which counter anything revolutionary.
