Liysa Swart, Domestic Violence Advocate
Karen James interviews domestic violence advocate Liysa Swart. Liysa released from prison in 2012 after serving 12 years for killing her abusive husband. Many women serving time in Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, Oregon’s only women’s prison, picked up a bat or knife to stop an abusive partner. Liysa says the women end up serving long sentences under Oregon’s mandatory minimum sentencing law, Measure 11, while the abusive partner is free. She works tirelessly to raise awareness about domestic violence which she calls a national disgrace.
