Educator and author Mike Rose on "Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker"
The guest is critically acclaimed author and educator MIKE ROSE. He'll talk about the 10th anniversary edition of his groundbreaking book, THE MIND AT WORK: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker.
THE MIND AT WORK paints a portrait of America at work and discusses how our society makes sweeping judgments about the intelligence of the common worker.
"If we think that whole categories of people--identified by class, by occupation--are not that bright, then we reinforce social separations and cripple our ability to talk across our cultural divides."
Mike Rose has been a teacher for more than 40 years in various settings from kindergarten to adult literacy programs to job training to graduate school and has had much experience with those considered educationally at risk, many shunted into vocation programs where questions about intellectual capacity were ever present. He has written 11 books on education, language and literacy, and cognition including Lives on the Boundary: the Struggles and Achievements of America’s Underprepared; Possible Lives: the Promise of Public Education in America; The Mind at Work: Valuing the Intelligence of the American Worker; Back to School: Why Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Education; and Why School? Reclaiming Education for All of Us.
