Does the DOJ-City of Portland Police Reform Agreement Go Far Enough?
Karen James with Dr. Audrey Terrell, President, Portland NAACP, and Kelvin Hall, public advocate for the Albina Ministerial Alliance Coalition for Justice and Police Reform (AMA Coalition). In September 2012, after a 15-month investigation, the U.S. Dept. of Justice Civil Rights Division found that Portland police engaged in a pattern or practice of excessive force against people suffering from or perceived to have a mental illness. The DOJ and the City of Portland negotiated a Settlement Agreement on police reforms and the AMA Coalition filed a motion in federal court to intervene.  The AMA Coalition's Fact Sheet (link below) lists areas where the Agreement does not go far enough.  On February 18, 2014, the Court will decide whether the proposed Settlement Agreement is fair, reasonable, and adequate. Albina Ministerial Alliance (AMA) Coalition is an umbrella group of organizations & individuals at the forefront of community organizing for police accountability and oversight in Portland. The NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization.
