Joseph Gallivan interviews Theo Downes-Le Guin and Brenna Murphy about digital art
On October 15, 2103, at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Theo Downes-Le Guin and Brenna Murphy. Downes-Le Guin has just opened the Upfor Gallery in the Pearl, devoted to digital art.
Murphy is showing Lattice-Face Parameter Chant, a mixture of prints and sculptures which have their origins in computer assisted design.
Lattice-Face Parameter Chant runs through November 1
FROM THE PRESS REELASE: Artist Brenna Murphy, a Portland resident and graduate of the Pacific Northwest College of Art, combines digitally constructed works on paper and sculptural installations to create a landscape of repeating, scaled structures that allude to ancient civilizations and contemporary technology.
Murphy alters and scales repeating patterns and manipulates textures and light until a cohesive and uncanny world emerges. For Murphy, the graphic systems she uses to design these forms are intuitive and meditative, and she compares her technique to the process of discerning language patterns in what appears to be noise.
They will talk about the origins of digital art and its place in the gallery system.
Joseph Gallivan has been a reporter since 1990. He has covered music for the London Independent, Technology for the New York Post, and arts and culture for the Portland Tribune.
