The Music of John Zorn and The Moonchild Trio

On this week's A Different Nature, we'll explore the music of one of composer John Zorn's long-running projects The Moonchild Trio.

Variously dedicated to and inspired by the works of Aleister Crowley, Antonin Artaud and Edgard Varèse, the group consists mainly of bassist Trevor Dunn, vocalist Mike Patton and long-time Zorn collaborator Joey Barron on drums, with Zorn conducting and at various time lending his reed-shredding sax playing (Guitarist Marc Ribot is also a frequent guest on most albums).

The Moonchild oeuvre is brutal, to say the least. Patton's wordless vocals are harrowing, difficult to listen to. Dunn's pummeling, distorted bass playing accompanied by Barron's brutal drumming at times veers into metal territory, or at least the ruined battlefield left behind by groups like Last Exit or The Boredoms.

Add to that the thematic motifs of Crowleyian Magick, Kabbalism, Satanic themes and Mike Patton's possessed glossolalia and it's guaranteed to be two hours of difficult listening.
