WOLVES IN THE LAND OF SALMON - an interview with wildlife tracker David Moskowitz
Wolves are making a comeback all across the western U.S. For a species that had been all but eradicated, wolves have shown an amazing amount of resilience in the last decade. Even more remarkable, the wolf’s ecological role as an apex carnivore is now being recognized as an important piece of the environmental puzzle, despite continued contention between the conservation, ranching, and hunting communities. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with David Moskowitz, whose new book WOLVES IN THE LAND OF SALMON documents the wild wolf’s return to the Pacific Northwest. David shares his experiences observing wolves at close range in habitats across the Pacific Northwest where they are returning and the few where they never left. We learn how wolves are smart, complex players uniquely adapted to the vast ecosystem of this stunning region.
David Moskowitz is a wildlife tracker, photographer and outdoor educator. He helped establish the Cascades Citizen Wildlife Monitoring Project, a citizen science effort to search for and monitor rare and sensitve wildlife in the Cascades and other Northwest wildlands.
In August David Moskowitz and three other conservation adventurers will follow the dispersal trail of Oregon's most famous wolf, OR-7, who left the Imnaha Pack in Northeastern Oregon in September 2011 and traveled alone all the way to Northern California, and part way back to Southern Oregon.
