Igor Stravinsky's iconic masterpiece is featured in this evening's program. Composed in 1918, Stravinsky based The Soldier's Tale on a Russian folk story, a parable about a soldier who swaps his violin in a deal with the devil for a book that predicts the future.

The performers for the evening's event includes some of the area's finest musicians:  Igor Shakhman, clarinet; Evan Kuhlmann, bassoon; Jeffrey Work, trumpet; Aaron LaVere, trombone; Brian Gardiner, percussion; Ron Blessinger, violin; and Jason Schooler, bass. The ensemble will be conducted by Ken Selden, Director of Orchestra Studies at Portland State University.

The concert also includes recent music that The Soldier's Tale has inspired--The Fiddler's Tale by Wynton Marsalis and works by Marylhurst student composers Linda Woody, Ian Guthrie, and Brandon Stewart, as well as the premier of Dr. John F. Paul's "A Composer's Tale."
