THE FIGHT FOR HOME: How (Parts of) New Orleans Came Back - An Interview with author and filmmaker Daniel Wolff
Five months after Hurricane Katrina, Daniel Wolff and Oscar-winning film director Jonathan Demme traveled to New Orleans. As they treked through the city and past the headline-making ruins, they discovered a deeper, more beautiful, and more troubled story—about a cross-section of New Orleanians trying to return to what remains of their city and to rebuild their lives.
On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Daniel Wolff, whose new book, THE FIGHT FOR HOME: How (Parts of) New Orleans Came Back, captures the voices of the radical volunteer groups, grass roots organizations, and citizens as they struggle to provide basic aid and services to their community.
The result of five years and hundreds of hours of film footage also became a documentary, I’m Carolyn Parker, which premiers on the PBS series POV on September 20, 2012.
Daniel Wolff is the author of How Lincoln Learned to Read; 4th of July, Asbury Park; You Send Me: The Life and Times of Sam Cooke, and two volumes of poetry, among other books. His writing has appeared in publications ranging from Vogue to Wooden Boat to Education Weekly. He is the co-producer, with Jonathan Demme, of several documentary film projects on New Orleans.
