working-class environmental movement, verizon strike, unpaid work & economic justice, Left & the Law
On this special Labor Day episode Joe Clement hosts and we hear:
- Bill Resnick and Daniel Randall discuss how working-class organizations can and should be the back-bone of the environmental movement. Daniel offers several examples.
- Joe comments on the distinction between and biases in how we view paid and unpaid work*, and why economic justice must be seen not just in terms of how we compensate paid work but how we facilitate unpaid work.
- Denise Morris interviews Mark Brenner, director of Labor Notes, about the recent Verizon strike and why some are calling it "the Wisconsin of the private sector".
- Continuing our Left and the Law series, Jan Haaken and Mike Schnedecker talk about the very controversial Memphis Three case from the mid-1990s, which rocked the nation when three then-teenagers were convicted for the murder of three younger boys in a scenario that allegedly involved satanic rituals.
*(domestic work, care of children and other dependents, self-care, volunteering of all sorts and some activity we typically think of as leisure)
