THE WORLD OF AFROBEAT
Join us for four hours of the music that shook an entire continent, the hard-hitting political sounds of "Afrobeat." Charlie Rooney, host of "World Beat Connection," will start with the most famous musician in all of Africa, Fela Kuti, and the origins of the sounds that he created, the dynamics of social protest that got him beaten, arrested, and imprisoned. We will hear from members of the Fela family, including Fema Kuti and Seun Kuti, as well as other legendary Nigerian musicians such as Tony Allen, Sonny Okosun, Funsho Ogundipe, and the incredible band, Antibalas. This music is strong, funky, vertical, and fiery. These musicians have placed their lives on the line to challenge the governments in western Africa that have oppressed millions of people. The positive side of this is the great respect for life, and the wonderful ability to sing and defy authority with music, a protest that KBOO sees in so many of its music and public affairs programs. Please join us for four solid hours of incredible Afrobeat music on Thursday, February 3rd. Pledge during this show, your support is essential to keep African music alive and well in Portland.
