On this edition of Century: Synthetic Drugs.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime hosted its third annual two-day open-ended intergovernmental expert group meeting on the global synthetic drug situation January 20 and 21. Discussions focused on international integrated responses across four areas: multilateralism, counternarcotics interventions, early warning, and health responses. On today’s show we’ll hear a presentation by one of the presenters at that meeting, Jared Brown, Scientific Affairs Officer (Forensic Early Warning) at UNODC’s Laboratory and Scientific Services in Vienna, Austria.

Plus, we hear from Professor Rohini Haar, MD, MPH, an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at UC Berkeley Public Health and an Emergency Physician at Kaiser Medical Center in Oakland, California, on the health impacts of tear gas, rubber bullets, and other so-called crowd control weapons used by police.
