The history and meaning of welfare.
Host Denise Morris talks with Johnanna Brenner about welfare -- its history and meaning. Is welfare something to be demeaned, as it is when we call the subsidies and tax breaks for corporations "welfare for the rich"? Doesn't that play into the right-wing idea that welfare is for people who won't work? Isn't welfare really about faring well, doing well, and being well -- something we all need and need to receive from others? Johanna Brenner is a retired professor of sociology, a political activist and a founding Member of In Other Words, Portland's feminist bookstore and resource center. She is the author of Women and the Politics of Class, from Monthly Review Press; and of Welfare: Reclaim the Word in Against the Current.
