Plant or cover, your choice, but don't leave garden beds naked. They don't need to "rest" (whatever that means).

Host Glen Andresen and co-pilot Jim Gilbert are again live in the studio this month. Wondering what to do with those beds after harvesting? Boy, do we have ideas! Best option? Cover crops (by far the very best). Second best option? Cover with mulch. Best mulch option? Compost. We discuss these and other options--all good. Lots of harvesting going on now, and Jim has ideas (and recipes) on what to do with tart fruit. Plus, can you plant potatoes now for earlier harvest next spring? And, what needs water now and what doesn't.

As always, we'll have a new Plant of the Month (table grapes) and a new Garden Stumper--the first listener who calls in with the correct answer gets a free sharpening of a gardening hand tool from Cully Farm Store in Northeast Portland. Our musical theme this month  is "covers." Plus, our Dirtbag Dictionary term is defining bulb/tuber/rhizome/corm. And finally, what Glen is trying to understand this month.

Don't forget, if you have a gardening question, and don't want to call in, you can always email us at thedirtbag@kboo.org -- we'll answer your question on the air during the next show. And, surprise, this is the same email to use to answer The Garden Stumper if you don't want to call in.

The Dirtbag, a garden variety show... Listen. Laugh. Learn.
