Russ Feingold on SCOTUS horrors; Left & the Law on Marcellus Williams and capital punishment of the innocent; How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom

This episode is hosted by Frann Michel and features these segments:

How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom

Israeli universities have long enjoyed a reputation as bastions of liberal democracy even as Israel continues to bomb schools in Gaza in its genocidal war.  Jan Haaken talks with Maya Wind about her new book, "Towers of Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom."  In the book, Wind documents how Israeli universities are directly complicit in the violation of Palestinian rights. Wind is a President’s and Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Departments of Black Study and Media & Cultural Studies at the University of California Riverside. Her scholarship broadly investigates how settler societies and global systems of militarism and policing are sustained, with a particular focus on the reproduction and export of Israeli security expertise.

Supreme Atrocities: Russ Feingold on SCOTUS

Bill Resnick discusses the Supreme Court's horrendous recent decisions with  Russell Feingold, former three-term Senator from Wisconsin and now President of the American Constitution Society, the liberals' answer to the Federalist Society.  In particular, they discuss recent decisions on presidential immunity, Chevron deference, and the National Labor Relations Board, and consider possible reforms including term limits, increasing the number of seats, and adding a code of ethics.

Left & the Law: Marcellus Williams and capital punishment of the innocent

Death row inmate Marcellus Williams was executed on September 24th, despite admissions from a prosecutor’s office claiming his innocence.  The attorneys for Williams filed two last-minute requests with the US Supreme Court on Monday. Both of them were denied before he was put to death at 6.10 pm central time. In their Left & the Law segment, Jan Haaken and Mike Snedeker talk about this case and why an execution could be carried out even when DNA evidence points to the person's innocence.  As an attorney whose cases involve death penalty appeals,  Mike explains the perverse legal rationalizations behind such executions. They also discuss broader legal and political shifts in the US around capital punishment.
