Led by Governor Ronald DeSantis the Florida legislature enacted the “Stop W.O.K.E. Act” that forbids teaching “the state-sanctioned racism that is critical race theory,” and subjects any accurate exploration of racial issues to harsh punishments. The Florida school system, from local School Boards to University Administrations, were stunned and did not fight back. Curriculums throughout the state were transformed and other red states quickly imitated. But Black and feminist organizations have organized and resisted, and parents across the state have joined the struggle. Bill Resnick interviews Jesse Hagopian, a teacher activist, co-founder of the radical school reform organization Rethinking Schools, and author of the book Teaching for Black Lives. They discuss the growing struggle that could create a great network of independent Black history groups, from Church and after school programs to neighborhood groups.
