On this episode of the Gap, Tammy and Althea interview Aviva McClure, the Festival Director for the 33rd Annual African Film Fest, and Nganji Mutiri, the writer and director of the film 'Juwaa.' We learn about the festival's long legacy in Portland, about Nganji's process for creating his film (see the trailer below) and what audiences can expect from the oldest African film festival in the United States.
'Juwaa' is playing February 17th at the Hollywood Theater, and tickets are free, first come first serve. The festival runs through the first week of March, so there's plenty left to see, find the full list here.
Then, we discuss City Commissioner Rene Gonzalez's move to restrict the Fire Department and Portland Street Response from giving tents and tarps to Portlanders in need. He cites 'fire safety' as the reason, but if we turn the clock back to when those stories first started circulating, the math isn't adding up. Stay vigilant people! We ask our listeners, who is doing the work in the community? Gotta get a positive spin on making change and helping people -- thank you to everyone who called!
KBOO is entering our special specials season -- All Thrills No Frills Volume 2. Check out what is coming up in the next few weeks, you won't want to miss it! Thanks as always for listening!
