Dawn Jones Redstone is a filmmaker who believes in mentoring creative people from underrepresented communities. Her short films, including Sista in the Brotherhood and We Have Our Ways, have tackled pressing social issues while offering opportunities for women of color to gain experience on film crews.
For her first feature film Mother of Color, about a single mother trying to balance career, family, and heritage, she called on producers Tara Johnson-Medinger and Ashley Song to help bring her vision to the screen. Dawn, Tara, and Ashley join S.W. Conser for a wide-ranging conversation about representation, creative solidarity, the continuing sidelining of childcare, and the slowly changing culture of the film production industry.
