Coverage in mainstream media of the in the so-called crisis of immigration at our southern border rarely mentions the history behind the latest surge of migrants from Central America. Historian Aviva Chomsky notes that with the passage of time, some things are remembered and others are forgotten. In the case of Central America, she argues, amnesia has been consciously fostered. US support for repressive regimes and policies often vanishes in discussions about contemporary violence in Central America and migration from the region. Chomsky contends that the history of resistance to U.S. intervention, needs to be recovered and remembered.
Today, in a re-broadcast from Against the Grain, Sasha Lily interviews Aviva Chomsky about the history of the Central American liberation movements and US interventions to make Central America safe for American capitalists. Against the Grain is hosted by Sasha Lilly and C.S Soong on KPFA Pacifica Radio in Berkley, California. It’s a program of ideas, in-depth analysis, and commentary on political, economic, social, and cultural issues important to radical thinking and activism. This segment originally aired on Sept 13, 2022.
