The Velvet Underground's Forgotten Talent

Bassist, organist, guitarist, and singer Doug Yule has unfairly gotten short shrift throughout the history of The Velvet Underground, ever since he replaced John Cale in the lineup of the legendary group in late 1968, and most recently in Portland filmmaker Todd Haynes' nonetheless brilliant 2021 documentary on the band. On today's special episode, we aim to correct the record, presenting rare tracks from throughout, and well beyond, Yule's tenure with the band. Included are four surprisingly solid live tracks from the remnants of the band in Amsterdam in 1971, following the departures of both Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison -- yet still featuring Yule and classic-lineup drummer Maureen Tucker -- and two valedictory performances by Yule as he emerged from a self-imposed exile from music, in his current hometown of Seattle in 2000. Warm up for Xmas Eve with our kind of Yule-tide carols, VU-and-Songcircle style, and support KBOO as we enter the closing week of our End of Year Drive!

Comments

I said on the air that “She’s My Best Friend” was a Loaded-era outtake; actually it was from the 1969 sessions that made up most of the “VU” outtakes album.

And “Sweet Jane” was also from the Crocodile Cafe set, which was actually in May 2000 (not March as I stated), and not from the Showbox.
