Ursula Barton, owner of Jailbreak Studios

On Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at 11:30 a.m. Joseph Gallivan interviews Ursula Barton, owner of Jailbreak Studios in Portland’s central industrial district. Barton talks about her ink-on-paper landscapes of Portland, how to make income as an artist by diversifying product and using social media, and why she is turning Jailbreak into a collective. Jailbreak, named for the old Portland police building it occupies, is Barton’s working studio, a classroom, a retail store for prints, souvenirs and clothing, and a small gallery which changes on First Fridays.

JAILBREAK STUDIOS

910 SE TAYLOR STREET PORTLAND, OR

OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY 11AM-6PM

JAILBREAK is an art studio, gallery, resource center, and storefront showcasing new work created by local Black and Indigenous people of color, LGBTQIA+, and female emerging artists. Our brick & mortar is built on land stolen from the Chinook, Cowlitz, and Clackamas Tribes.

JAILBREAK is the transformation of Jailhouse Studios, a female-run creative workspace since 2011, named after the history of the building. In the early 1900's, the building was erected for the Southeast Portland Police department to stable their horses.

Today, our mission is to grow our platform for underrepresented emerging artists and Portlanders who want to maintain and grow the culture of our city. We have created a resource center and classroom connected to a storefront and gallery that provides technical and educational growth resources, bringing together a network of creatives, and offering visibility and autonomy for local artists as part of this mission. JAILBREAK opens a new dialogue for the whole community to participate in maintaining and growing our art scene through elevating the stories of historically underrepresented communities and inviting you all to support them, and their stories through patronage.

You can support JAILBREAK and this community of artists by purchasing work on our new online shop

Art Focus airs live at 11.30 am on Tuesdays and is archived to the KBOO website that evening.
