Please join us as we talk with Amelia Fowler of Voting in Jails PDX. Many people think that those who are currently incarcerated or have a felony, have lost the right to vote. In Oregon, this is not the case. Prisoners can vote if they are serving time on a misdemeanor charge or if they are awaiting sentencing on a felony charge. Once out of jail everyone can vote, even those with a felony (ORS 137.281). This represents a huge portion of those who are imprisoned in our county jails. Many people who go to jail are never even convicted of a crime. Yet there is no education provided to them on their right to vote and there is no clear pathway to register and cast a ballot in Multnomah County Jails. Voting in Jails PDX fights voter suppression of people who are incarcerated in Oregon County jails by facilitating voter registration, promoting voter education, and ensuring policy implementation.
