Join Oregon PSR and our partner organizations for a commemoration of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the current nuclear disaster at Fukushima, with an opportunity for you to get involved in creating a nuclear-free future.
When: Sunday, August 7th, 2011, 1:00-4:00 pm (with guest speakers from 2:00-3:00 pm)
Where: Japanese American Historical Plaza (Portland Waterfront at NW Naito Parkway & Couch Street)
We are expanding this year’s event, which is free and open to the public, to a 3-hour afternoon fair that will include informational booths, activities and speakers to engage participants in learning about, and taking action for, a world free of both nuclear weapons and nuclear power. The formal program of speakers will be from 2:00-3:00 PM, with live music and other activities running throughout the afternoon. We are excited to announce that popular local bands The Slants and Portland Taiko will be performing, noted peace activist Kathy Kelly will speak, and that the commemoration will be part of the program of the 2011 Veterans for Peace National Convention, which is being held in Portland this year.
Activity booths include:
- Family-friendly crafts such as making origami cranes and peace books
- Photo exhibit on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
- Opportunities to take action for nuclear abolition and peace
- Information about supporting alternatives to nuclear power
