Indecency Regulations




  • Depictions of sexual or excretory acts or organs; Profanity, including well known swear words for sexual organs or actions is not allowed. So even if a song only has 1 profanity, you can’t play it. Remember, if you can’t say it in front of your teacher—you can’t say it on the air. 
  • Fleeting references are no longer allowable: “f***ing brilliant,” “oh s**t.”  Well known songs like “Working Class Hero” by John Lennon which includes the f-word.
  • Partial editing is no longer allowable: “mother-bleep-er.”
  • A song labeled “radio editdoes not mean that it is currently allowable.  It may have been allowable in the past but not now.  It must be previewed.
  • Sexual innuendo (songs that mean something sexual without explicitly saying it), dirty jokes, puns are not okay to play between 6 am – 10 pm.
  • Song titles or band names that contain profanities are only allowable from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and only when back announcing or announcing upcoming songs.[1]
  • Indecency in any language is not allowed.
  • Racist, sexist, homophobic and other demeaning material that may not be an FCC issue is important for our mission.

The profane words listed above in theater, poetry and music are not considered indecent during these late-night hours.  However, “gratuitous language” is not permissible.  For example, the host, guests and callers are not permitted to say “F*** Bush” or “WTF?” outside the context of legitimate performance.


      All KBOO programmers must:

  • Preview all material before airing.
  • Use the bleep button if needed.
  • Be aware that:

o       editing is the host’s responsibility, and the engineer is only a backup.

o       program may be briefly suspended while Program Director investigates complaints.

penalties may include suspension and termination.
