Host Celeste Carey welcomes Evelyne Ello-Hart, to share her experiences in Portland as an African woman and as the Coordinator of the African Women's Coalition of Portland.
While all refugees face serious challenges during resettlement, African women are especially vulnerable and at risk. Many are single mothers with several children, and have lost their husbands, sons, brothers and fathers to the ravages of war. They now must assume positions- that in their traditional cultures- were held by men. Many are not prepared for this role, and the absence of a supportive partner creates enormous stress and fear. The African Women’s Coalition provides the culturally supportive and nurturing environment that builds the capacity of the community to help itself , and allows other members of the community to reach their highest potential through support, guidance and educational opportunities.
