Tom Nelson on the USAPATRIOT Act
Portland area lawyer and activist spoke on the USAPATRIOT Act.

A main theme was the interplay between individual rights and collective security. Mr Nelson showed slides of the 1st, 4th and 5th amendments to the US Constitution and gave several examples, including Portland’s Mohamed Mohamud case, of how government actions may vary.  He argued that individual rights are both most vulnerable and most important in times of crises. Mr Nelson, a lawyer, summarized by saying that the courts may slowly be reigning in the constitutional abuses of the U.S.A.P.A.T.R.I.O.T Act and that citizens are ultimately responsible for maintaining their constitutional freedoms.
