Grupo Corpo Returns to the Schnitz Tonight

Tonight at the Schnitz, Grupo Corpo. This is the kind of dance company that I don't see often, and I am excited about it. Here, you have that special balance of work presenting tradtions across the globe, it is a confluence of ballet, contemporary dance, and the myriad Brazilian traditions that are the repertoire of Grupo Corpo, and thirty-three years from lead choreographer, Rodrigo Pederneiras. This is not only observed for the movement, but also the music.

Interim Report

Sean Ongley

4 Days now in to the onslaught of contemporary art and performance, I hit the wall. I took Sunday #1 off. Of course, there is always Sunday #2, the final day, but really, its Saturday that brings it. I look at the performance schedule and realize, shoot, I've almost covered this! Ok, so, what have I seen? Lets do this chronologically.

No.Fest 2010 Mini-Fest Benefit Tonight

KBOO's newest baby bird flying from the nest, following the footsteps of Pickathon and other KBOO sponsored events that have grown great big wings, flying high and in formation with the Radio Station that sat, incubating the egg, nursing the young baby bird until it was ready to go: InterArts is the newest one I speak of. InterArts is the creation of KBOO producer Sean Ongley and St. Johns business owner Jeffrey Helwig, out of the wake of KBOO's heavy involvement with "No.Fest:Nu.Music.Arts" starting in 2008 with a remote broadcast and 2009 with umbrella status to assist in our fund raising. From that model, InterArts incorporated. The event as it is now forming in to its 3rd realization is focused more on the multi-cultural and interdisciplinary than ever before.

Global Perspective: 33rd International Film Festival

The benefits of seeing films from other countries are big. Not only can you take your experience to the bar, cafe, or water cooler, and brag on your worldliness, but there is an authentic experience happening in your heart when you open the mind to perspectives outside your own world-view. I personally only had time for two screenings and I chose them by country: Spain and Japan.

Un | Herd Seeks Co-Producer

Host, Programmer, and Producer of Un | Herd, Sean Ongley is seeking a counterpart interested in the whole process of programming. Un | Herd is a live show for "outside" arts and performance, usually music. Currently, the show is branching out to syndication. in Portland and in Berkeley are currently playing the "Un | Herd Archive" series available for download at The undertaking of a sole Producer in booking, editing, engineering (god bless the help of regular engineer Devin), and promoting both a live and syndicated show has become just too much to balance along with the rest of life. So lets keep it growing, for the good of  KBOO and performance arts!

Review: West Coast Premiere; Orphee, an Opera by Philip Glass

Click here for an audio download of this review!

Portland was honored with the privilege of hosting the West Coast premiere of Orphee, a relatively new opera composed by Philip Glass. Orphee is a 2 Act story of mysterious death in juxtaposition of two worlds --– driven by a score from Philip Glass. The music itself worthy of a concert, beautifully composed, demonstrating the characteristic hypnotism of polyrhythm mixed in a rich palette, patterned by blocks and cycles; the kind of stuff that Glass is venerated for. And the Portland Opera Orchestra performs the score by Glass beautifully.

Portland Jazz Fest Tickets available to volunteers!

Hello, I am the self-proclaimed leading reporter on the Portland Jazz Festival. But I need help!! I just did the leg work to get the following tickets and any reporters or jazz programmers who are interested in attending with me and/or picking up my slack for the shows that I can not make it to at all. I will be bringing a field recorder to the shows (no artists are providing music releases) and it would be ideal to have someone interested in hustling interviews. I recieved 2 tickets to the following shows and next to each show I will write whether or not I'm planning to attend.

Joshua Redman

Bill Charlap

Spanish Harlem Orchestra (2 available)

The Bad Plus (2 available)
