the U.S. defense secretary is calling for more money to be put into drone planes to attack Iraq

Defense secretary Robert Gates is calling for a rapid increase in spending on attack drone planes for use in Iraq, Afghanistan and Eastern Pakistan.
This plan has raised the ire of many in the peace community due to the drone’s inconsistent results and bad record of civilian casualties.

Portland: Sactuarty City

A number of local anti-war veteran groups have called on the Portland City Council to declare the city a ‘sanctuary’ for war resisters.
The group is currently collecting signatures for a petition to submit to the City Council, which has not yet taken any action on the ‘Sanctuary City’ proposal.

"Women in Black" hold their vigil infront of a Federal Building

The Portland ‘Women in Black’ held their weekly vigil at noon today in front of the Federal Building in downtown Portland.
Members of the group dress in black as a symbol of mourning for those who have died due to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land.

Holocaust Art and Music - Interview with Cantor Ida Rae Cahana

April 19, 20, and 21 2009 are the dates for Portland's Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Day) Community Commemoration.

This event is sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Portland, The Archdiocese of Portland, Ecumenical Ministries of Portland, University of Portland, and others.  For this year, instead of religious services the Holocaust experience will be explored through art, music, and film.  In particular the paintings, letters, and poems of survivor Alice Lok Cahana will be presented and discussed.  Alice Cahana is the mother of Rabbi Z. Michael Cahana of Congregation Beth Israel.
