Robyn celebrates his 56th birthday tomorrow, so I thought it appropriate to re-air the Soft Boys / Robyn special that I produced last fall for KBOO’s membership drive. I took the opportunity to re-tool the last half hour a bit so as to go out with a bang rather than a strum, AND so that I could fit in a track from Robyn’s brand new cd “Goodnight Oslo”.

Boy Eats Drum Machine was my guest this morning. He is a one-man turntablist band from right here in Portland, Oregon. He has a fantastic new album out called “Booomboxxx”. He is our inaugural live guest, showing up at 4am to play a set. My daughter Eliza made him an award to celebrate that very fact.

Boy Eats Drum Machine live at KBOO

Portland's own Boy Eats Drum Machine brought his one-man-turntable-band to the KBOO studios for early morning radio on ANODYNE.  Program host John B. Jones chatted with Jon Ragel (AKA Boy Eats Drum Machine) about songwriting and sampling, turntablism, and the limited custom hand-made album covers Jon made for the vinyl edition of BEDM's latest album "booomboxxx".

Here's the setlist: Gun Fight, Booomboxxx, The Crack + The Sea, La La La La La!, Demonic With Horns, and Si(x)cuse Me

KBOO Honors International Women's Day, Sunday, March 8th

International Women's Day is an annual event that began in New York City around the turn of the twentieth century. Initially it sought to raise awareness of the achievements of women. In 1908, on this day, 15,000 women marched in New York City for better pay, working conditions, and an end to child labor. The day became a recognized holiday in many newly socialist countries over the next several years, but ironically fell off the radar, by and large, in the US, until the late 1960s.

Join us on Sunday, March 8th, beginning at 6 AM, as KBOO volunteers honor the contributions of women to art and culture, and raise awareness of the issues that continue to challenge us to action. With 21 hours of special programming produced by women, featuring information and music of the women of the world, and our own backyard.
