A Different Nature on 02/20/12

A Different Nature
Air date:
Mon, 02/20/2012 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:

Tonight we explore the music of one of the unsung heros of electronic music, British composer Daphne Oram. She worked at the BBC in the late 1950s where she co-founded the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and became its first Studio Manager. A year later she resigned from the workshop, being unhappy with BBC's music department's lack of interest in the more experimental music that was beginning to be created in Europe and abroad. Instead she designed her own  Oramics Studios for Electronic Composition, and produced a far wider range of music than the Radiophonic Workshop.

Anina Bennett and Paul Guinan

Words and Pictures
program date:
Thu, 01/12/2012

The creative team of Anina Bennett and Paul Guinan follow up their epic steampunk saga Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel with the companion book Frank Reade: Adventures in the Age of Invention.  Combining the artwork and storylines from forgotten dime novels with real events of the Victorian era, Anina and Paul bring the swashbuckling character of Frank Reade back to life, warts and all.  As in Boilerplate, meticulously sculpted miniature models find their way into the "archival images" of Frank Reade, leading readers to wonder where reality ends and fiction begins.

Anina and Paul will be appearing around Portland throughout the month of February, along with local costumers and scale models of the vehicles.  More information will be available at
