Fall Membership Drive continues as Abe and Joe discuss the GOP's great capitulation.
In case you missed it: the attempt by a rogue neo-Confederate faction in the Republican Party to destroy the Affordable Care Act (along with the faith and credit of the United States) failed utterly. The ACA may be a clunky boon to the insurance industry, but it's better than what we had before. At least it lives to fight another day. Abe and Joe take your calls. Plus -- it's the Fall Membership Drive!

Justin Lewis - Media & Consumer Capitalism (lecture)
Orchestrated wants driven by sophisticated advertising techniques have created a culture of consumption. Appetites for the latest hot thing are engineered. Media campaigns sell cool and sexy. Marketing is key. Data are collected. People are profiled, then targeted. Cell phones. Have to get the latest one with all new features, faster processor and design. We can't be left behind. More sales means more profits. The capitalist economic system is predicated on making money and barely considers the environmental effects down the road. That's somebody else's problem. In the U.S., consumerism is connected to ideology. Freedom is equated with the ability to buy things.

On November 3 at the Hollywood Theater, KBOO presents "KPFA On the Air," a documentary on the history of KPFA in Berkeley and Pacifica Radio. This evening we present a selection of audio from the film, along with discussion with guest Jeffrey Blankfort, former KPFA producer. Pacifica pioneered the listener-sponsored model that helped launch community radio in the U.S. It has played a major role in the social movements of the past 60 years, and KBOO continues that proud tradition.
