National Radio Day is a time for communities across the country to celebrate radio.

The goal is to strengthen the radio ecosystem, highlighting all kinds of radio, but especially stations that focus on local service. National Radio Day is a time to honor one of the most longstanding electronic media and its role in our everyday lives. Radio delivers information, news, entertainment and company to millions of Americans every hour of every day. We invite listeners, broadcasters, producers and stations to celebrate on August 20th.

KBOO will be celebrating with Freeform Portland, KPSU and XRAY at CENTAUR PALOOZA featuring 42 local bands! We will all be at Centaurpalooza, Centaur Guitar’s showcase of local music, now in its 10th and final year. This festival, located at 2833 NE Sandy Blvd., in Portland, starts at 12pm and is all-ages and free to the public. Later in the evening, the festival will move to Katie O’ Brians, at 2801 NE Sandy Blvd.; Freeform Portland will do a live-remote broadcast from 10pm to midnight.

“Supporting local music is a huge part of supporting the community,” Freeform Portland’s Board of Directors Vice President, Pi Winslow, says. “It’s part of community radio’s everyday business, and we’re so excited to share the space together with Centaur Guitar’s incredible work to shine a light on Portland’s talent and creativity.”

In addition to Centaurpalooza, KBOO Community Radio, Freeform Portland, KPSU, and XRAY-FM are participating in the greater, nation-wide effort to enhance community radio’s visibility in the US broadcast environment. National Radio Day is a time for communities across the country to celebrate radio. The goal is to strengthen the radio ecosystem, highlighting all kinds of radio, but especially stations that focus on local service. Each station will submit a sonic ID, which will play on a relay of community stations all across the country.

“National Radio Day is a way to fuel appreciation for radio as well as to show solidarity with stations, independent producers, and groups like Brown Paper Tickets and the National Federation of Community Broadcasters — folks who share a media equity mission,” says Becky Meiers, Development Director at KBOO Community Radio. “Freeform Portland, KPSU, and XRAY are important partners in this work, and we’re glad to work with them this year in honoring the spectrum we share!”
