Much was made last year about the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary, which really was in 2015. But in December. And they only played three times in December 1965.

So I consider 1966 to be the launch of the performing Grateful Dead, since they played over 100 shows that year, a little foreshadowing of their career. There are some great sounding recordings available, including today's featured show, May 19th at the Avalon Ballroom.
