Adam Hochschild on SPAIN IN OUR HEARTS: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939

Host Per Fagereng speaks with Adam Hochschild about his new book SPAIN IN OUR HEARTS: Americans in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, A sweeping history of the Spanish Civil War, told through nine American and British characters including Hemingway and George Orwell. It was a war between fascism, communism, and democracy that preceeded World War II, and a tale of idealism and a noble cause that failed.
Hochschild also writes about an unforgettable oilman with a Trumpian personality whose acts in support of Spanish general Francisco Franco and then Adolf Hitler helped ensure that fascism would come to power in Spain and, in the end, that the globe would be bathed in blood.

ADAM HOCHSCHILD is the author of seven books including King Leopold's Ghost (1998), To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914–1918 (2011), Bury the Chains (2005), The Mirror at Midnight (1990), and The Unquiet Ghost (1994).
