Day laborers who gather at Southeast Sixth and Ankeny each day may have to relocate to a not-yet-constructed day labor center, according to the latest city plan. Mayor Tom Potter will meet with participants in latest round of public planning discussions set for 5:00 PM today, in Lovejoy Room on the 2nd Floor of City Hall. Day laborers face difficult conditions and are often underpaid or not paid at all for their work. And now, with anti-immigrant violence on the rise, they face even more precarious threats. Several weeks ago, two Latino men south of Oregon City were severely beaten by a crowd of white teens. According to police, the mob kicked, beat and pummeled the Salem men with large rocks while chanting, "Go back to Mexico." Last weekend, a group of about one hundred rallied at the park to protest the rising anti-immigrant hate and violence. KBOO reporter Lina Aglialoro spoke with Cesar who attended the vigil.
