Membership Director - this is a part-time position, 32 hours per week/$15.11 per hour. Yes, our beloved Sun is leaving us (as a paid employee) in the end of December.

 
Full-time position, PM News and Public Affairs Director. Jenka is not leaving but will serve as our Web and New Media Coordinator. This is a salaried position $31,426.38/year.

PM News & Public Affairs Director   

Reports to: Station Manager
Employment Status:  Exempt                                   Hours:  40 hours per week
General Description:  To manage all evening news and public affairs programming, ensuring that it is consistent with the KBOO programming charter.  To train volunteers in news and public affairs programming skills.

Qualifications

  • Management and supervisory skills which place emphasis on teamwork in a collaborative setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in motivating and guiding volunteers in the carrying out of a programming charter.
  • Proven experience in news and public affairs production, including news stories, interviews, and features, preferably in community or public radio – minimum three years experience preferred.
  • Experience in training people in the above skills.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to assess and stay informed on local, regional, and national issues.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work under deadline and to direct volunteers to work under deadline.
  • Ability to work evening hours, and some weekend hours as necessary.
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred.
  • Computer skills, including ability to use the Internet for journalism research.
  • Familiarity with online news feeds and newsroom management software
  • Proven experience working with diverse communities.
 
Essential Functions
  • Coordinate evening news and public affairs programming. Work with Morning News &  Public Affairs Director and Program Director as appropriate.
  • Write, produce, and announce news stories, interviews, and public affairs programming as necessary.
  • Conduct and coordinate news trainings.
  • Lead on website development and problem solving.
  • Content development and posting for website and social media.
  • Member of staff tech work group.
  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit volunteers to participate in the various positions in the department (e.g. anchors, producers, reporters, engineers, and assistant editing)
  • Supervise and assist news and public affairs volunteers. Coordinate substitutions (volunteer and/or programming) as necessary.
  • Evaluate and provide critical feedback to evening news and public affairs programmers.
  • Keep informed on alternative news sources, including syndicated programs, internet news sources, and independent news services.
  • Inform listening audience and general public about programming through the website, on-air promotional spots, press releases, ads, etc.
  • Coordinate field equipment sign out.
  • Coordinate field recording events with AM News Director & Public Affairs Director and volunteers.
  • Attend Programming Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Coordinate daily upload of news podcast.
  • Work to implement KBOO’s Affirmative Action plan.
 
Salary
This is a full-time position with a starting salary $31,426.38/year. The employee shall be eligible for annual step increases subject to conditions in KBOO’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Probationary Period
KBOO is a union shop and all (non management) staff are members of Communications Workers of America (CWA)- Local 7901. Any person hired will be required to join and pay dues to CWA Local 7901 after 90 days. There is a six month probationary period. This period is not to be construed as a contract.

Benefits
Benefits include medical and dental coverage, disability and life insurance, and credit union eligibility. This position also offers paid vacation, sick leave, and 11 paid holidays per year, in accordance with KBOO’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. FSLA-exempt employees receive paid compensatory time off.  Eligibility for the pension plan is one year after the date of hire.

Working Conditions
KBOO is a strong promoter of locally produced programming. The Evening News and Public Affairs Director oversees a one-hour newscast from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and three hours of public affairs programming (from 4:00 – 5:00 pm, and 6:00 – 8:00 pm) , Monday through Friday.  There are many evening news volunteers per week and several public affairs collectives and volunteers, all of whom are under your supervision. You must be able to supervise and critique volunteers, and must be able to refer those volunteers who fail to meet news department requirements to other potential opportunities at the station.  This position works closely with the AM News & Public Affairs Director.  Both employees occasionally need to substitute for each other during vacations or illness.

There are also other public affairs programs during the week and Sunday, both in English and Spanish.  The Evening News and Public Affairs Director assists these volunteers in training and production as necessary.
Regarding news sources:  KBOO is a Pacifica affiliate. We seek out alternative/independent news sources and place high priority on training volunteers to produce unique news stories on important local, national and international issues that are unreported or underreported and are in line with KBOO’s values.
KBOO has regular membership drives. The job requires planning news and public affairs specials as fundraisers and extra working hours to assist the drive as necessary.
 
The atmosphere is hectic and stimulating. The ability to work in this kind of environment is essential.

Membership Director

Reports to: Station Manager
Employment Status: .80 FTE     (32 hours week)
Hours:  30 hrs/week most weeks; 40-45 hrs/week during the membership drives - 6-8 weeks total/year.

General Description:  To meet or exceed KBOO’s budgeted Membership Drive goals and to maintain relationships with members and listeners as well as businesses that support KBOO.
 
Qualifications
  • Ability to learn and maintain membership database or client management software. DonorPerfect Online preferred.
  • Ability to train and supervise volunteers.
  • Experience and/or ability to work with donors preferred.
  • Problem- solving skills related to fundraising and membership services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent skill in communication and customer service
  • Organizational and time- management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as necessary.

Essential Functions
  • Coordinate regular membership drives in cooperation with the Development Director, Volunteer Coordinator and other staff including:  planning, developing forms and procedures, obtaining and processing thank you gifts, advertising, obtaining meal donations, training and supervising staff and volunteers, supervising shifts, data entry, and follow-up.
  • Support the Development department with fundraising events, major donor relationships, annual report and other direct mail campaigns.
  • Maintain membership database.
  • Coordinate and oversee membership activities, including: member inquiries, recaptures, renewals and cancellations, benefits, mailings, membership cards, EFTs (electronic funds transfers), follow-up mailings and phone calls.
  • Work on designing and maintaining KBOO merchandise with staff.
  • Prepare timely and accurate membership drive reports.  Prepare quarterly Membership Report for the Board of Directors and staff.
  • Work with Finance Department to reconcile finances and to track gifts.Track expense line items that are related to membership.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise and maintain relationships with volunteers, as needed, to support the membership department.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Attend staff trainings.
  • Work to implement KBOO's Mission, Vision, Program Charter, Affirmative Action Plan, AND KBOO's House Rules
  • Other duties as assigned.

Computer, voicemail, copier, fax. Applicant must be able to remain in a stationary position approximately 50% or more of the time. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Applicant must have ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer.
