Is fluoridation a public health threat or panacea? A conversation with Dr. Paul Connett.
Is fluoridation a public health threat or panacea? A conversation with Dr. Paul Connett.
Oregon ranks 48th among states in percentage of residents with fluoridated water and Portland is the second largest metropolitan area without community fluoridated water. Public advocacy groups like Upstream Public Health argue Oregon children suffer from unacceptably high rates of dental decay and tooth loss as a result. The group met with City Commissioner Randy Leonard earlier this fall and is working with political consultant Mark Weiner on the issue.
But there are other voices who say that in the case of fluoridation, the cure is worse than the disease. Dr. Paul Connett, of the Fluoride Action Network has been a vocal opponent to the introduction of fluoride into drinking water, citing extensive research that fluoride is responsible for far more health risks - cancer, Alzheimer's Disease, and damage to developing teeth - than the questionable benefits it brings. Dr. Connett, who is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry (environmental chemistry and toxicology) at St. Lawrence University joins Jo Ann and Dave this Thursday to talk about what should and shouldn't be in our drinking water.
Jo Ann Hardesty is a former state legislator, former executive director of Oregon Action and past board president of Portland Community Media as well as a long-time leader in the struggle for racial and economic justice. Dave Mazza is a freelance journalist and former editor of The Portland Alliance who has covered and been involved in Portland's civil rights, environmental, labor and peace movements for over 20 years

Not in Our Water!
There are significant and legitimate questions concerning safety, efficacy and quality of the fluoride products used, lack of accountability by the manufacturers and distributors of these products, and lack of any federal, state or local authority regulating or taking responsibility for these products.
There is genuine concern that the government should not be in the business of distributing a non-FDA approved drug through the drinking water supply. In addition, a growing body of peer-reviewed scientific evidence indicates that compounds used for fluoridation have sever adverse health effects including; bone cancer, hip fracture in the elderly, depressed thyroid function and lowered I.Q. in children.
A recently published study from Harvard Dental School found that young boys between the ages of five and ten years old who drink fluoridated water at so called “optimally fluoridated” levels (1 ppm) are 500% more likely to develop an often fatal bone cancer (osteosarcoma) than boys who do not drink fluoridated water. This study corroborates earlier studies on the fluoride/osteosarcoma link by the National Cancer Institute and the New Jersey Health Department.
Despite the body of peer-reviewed research raising health concerns, fluoride compounds such as the hydrofluosilisic acid have never been safety tested or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA confirms that fluoride meets the legal definition of a “drug” and has approved its topical use in toothpaste and mouthwash, but the FDA has never approved fluoride compounds for ingestion for the purpose of caries reduction. Proponents are unable to produce any controlled, peer-reviewed studies showing that long-term ingestion of fluoride compounds is safe.
The federal Department of Health and Human Services recently lowered the recommended daily “dose” of fluoride from 0.7 - 1.2 mg/liter to a maximum of 0.7 mg/liter. This represents a lowering of the so called “optimal amount” by 41%. For six decades we have been told fluoride is safe and effective at 1 mg/liter. We now know that amount was excessive, in addition to the fact that we are getting fluoride from so many other sources: pharmaceuticals, dental pastes and treatments as well as pesticides and fumigants. Now that we are finally learning the truth about fluoridation chemicals, more and more communities are demanding that this questionable and arcane practice be abandoned.
A common question is, “If it is so bad, why would Picker and his ilk recommend it?” It is important to understand that dentists and other professionals are extremely busy and often follow the advice of their trade associations. Trade associations are paid to look out for the interest of their members, not the public. Often, these organizations are paid to promote fluoridation. These organizations have a duty and responsibility to fully disclose they have a financial interest in offering testimony. Ordinary citizens with serious concerns regarding fluoridation are not being paid to defend the safety of our drinking water.
Fluoride is a by-product of phosphate mining and is contaminated with lead, arsenic and a host of other toxic chemicals. Normally, the industry would have to pay very expensive fees to have it disposed of in a toxic waste facility. Instead, they sell it in its raw industrial state to water providers and municipalities to dispense via their drinking water purportedly to prevent dental caries.
Yet these same manufactures refuse to stand by their “product” and declare it safe and effective for its intended purpose. Astoundingly, they specifically disclaim that it is any of those things. It is never prudent to rely on third party endorsements, especially where the manufacturer, distributor and third party endorsers stand to benefit financially by the practice and promotion of fluoridation.
One need only to follow the money.
Mass Medication by Politicians
Do you really want Politicians to forcibly medicate you? Dentists and Politicians are not educated as chemists - generally. Those that take the time to study Fluoride and Mercury would never put them in someone's mouth, or advocate mass "medication" with a neurotoxic halogen (fluoride). (It's toxicity is on the scale between Lead and Arsenic!) Do you want to drink rat poison or insecticide? Prior to the 1940's these were the main commercial uses for Fluoride. Oh, by the way, it also kills people, too. Kids have died after swallowing it in the dental chair, and the parents won their lawsuits. It's public record.
In industry, it lowers the smelting temperature of metal ores and disolves Uranium into a gas (Uranium Hexafluoride) so that it can be enriched for atomic weapons. These industries funded the Fluorine Lawyers Association to defend this chemical against Environmental lawsuits, even resulting in the EPA discontinuing testing for it -- even though Fluoride still holds the record for the highest dollar volume of environmental claims of any chemical of all time. (Check out "the fluoride deception" on youtube.)
The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, taking a halfway stance, says it's best used topically, that swallowing it doesn't provide much help for kid's teeth. And that mixing baby formula in fluoridated water can be dangerous for infants. I almost forgot, the Harvard study from about 2005 with a 500% increase in bone cancer in boys that grew up drinking fluoridated water.
And consider that European countries that do not fluoridate, have better teeth than we do. Could cavities really have more to do with sugar consumption after all?
So, let's not abdicate our personal responsibility for our health and be mass medicated by politicians. For those who want fluoride, there's no shortage of toothpastes, pills and drops that they can ingest. For the rest of us, we should have the freedom not to have to drink fluoride.
Picker is exactly right on fluoridation
I'm a longtime family physician and have worked all my life with underserved, uninsured, and others who end up suffering with from inequities. I was shocked to come to Oregon 28 years ago from California and see so much preventable pediatric and adult dental disease. A quarter century later we've made little progress here, but instead are subjected to increasingly strident and poorly supported anti-fluoridation arguments.
Consider this comparison: Those of us who believe that humans are contributing substantially to environmentally devastating climate change will readily cite mainstream scientific experts and criticize "leaders," naysayers and rogue scientists who claim otherwise. Yet often the very same people disrespect mainstream scientists (and the international public health track record) when it comes to community water fluoridation. This makes no sense to me.
This is a social justice issue. People like me -- an environmentalists and health activist -- can and should get fully behind community water fluoridation for the sake of the children, adults and elders in our society who would greatly benefit from it
Community Water Fluoridation
It's tough to see how preventing 2/3 of the operations required for the most severe cavities in baby teeth is a "questionable" benefit (quote from above). This remarkable effect, which saved 50% of the dental bills for Medicaid children in Louisiana, has how been independently confirmed in New York and Texas.

Closer to home, Portlanders should stop worrying about an imagined risk to salmon runs and visit places that are actually caring for poor kid's dental disease.
The Creston Clinic ( http://www.pps.k12.or.us/schools/creston/210.htm ) is one facility. Go there and look over the shoulder of a volunteer dentist and see what she says about water fluoridation.
Essentially no credentialed expert in oral public health agrees with Dr. Connett's view that water fluoridation is a present danger. Readers might want to read the long briefs he and others associated with the Fluoride Action Network recently submitted to the California Carcinogen Identification Committee arguing that fluoride causes cancer. No doubt many, eager to believe his view, will be convinced.

The California Committee subsequently voted 7/0 to NOT list fluoride as a carcinogen. This is but the latest of blue ribbon, independent, unbiased reviews to find community water fluoridation safe:
California Carcinogen Identification Committee (2011)
European Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (2011)
Department of Public Health, Scotland, UK (2008)
Health Canada Report on Fluoride and Human Health (2008)
National Health and Medical Research Council, Australian Government (2007)
National Research Council, U.S.A. (1993, 2006)
World Health Organization (1994, 1996, 2006)
I'm pretty certain the reason Upstream Health (named here), is supporting water fluoridation is because better oral health, especially for children, results. They have no reason to act other than their clear understanding of the science. . ditto the Northwest Health Foundation another Oregon institution supporting better health for all Oregonians which is also on record in support of community water fluoridation.
It is high time for Oregonians to drop the John Birch and unthinking enviro paranoia and get on the humanitarian side of this issue.
