Portland Playhouse has extended its epic production of August Wilson’s ‘Gem of the Ocean’ (PDF) through the beginning of November. Find out what drives this deep piece of community history with director Brian Weaver, actor Kevin Jones, and host Lisa Loving.
"Mythic in its proportions, ‘Gem of the Ocean’ travels to 1904, when slavery was a living memory and African Americans were searching for a new life within the uncertain meaning of freedom." Have you seen the play? Call in with your thoughts, 503-231-8187.

Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon?:
A Hidden History
FREE DISCUSSION ABOUT THE REAL HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICANS IN OREGON
October 30th, 5:00pm at the World Trade Center Theater, 121 SW Salmon St.
Have you ever wondered why the Black population in Oregon is so small? Oregon has a history not only of Black exclusion and discrimination, but also of a vibrant Black culture that helped sustain many communities throughout the state—a history that is not taught in schools.
This is the focus of “Why Aren’t There More Black People in Oregon?: A Hidden History,” a free conversation with Portland State University author and adjunct professor Walidah Imarisha. This program is hosted by Portland Playhouse and sponsored by the Oregon Humanities Conversation Project.
Join us for Gem of the Ocean before or after the conversation!
