The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 06/22/10

Air date:
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Is Oregon an anti-immigrant state? A new study suggests it is.

A study commissioned by a consortium of Northwestern public radio stations says that a majority of Northwesterners -- Oregonians, Washingtonians and Idahoans, or whatever they call themselves -- agree with the anti-immigrant law passed recently in Arizona. In Oregon, that support is at 61 percent.

What does it mean? Is anti-immigrant sentiment more widespread than we thought? And what is that sentiment exactly? Fear, born of cultural ignorance? Economic anxiety? Good ol' racism? A toxic brew of all three? With Joe on vacation, Abe leads the discussion.

Is Oregon an anti-immigrant state?

I think much of the hatred and "anti-immigrant sentiment" is generated by a perception created by propaganda from big business through their monopoly and pressure on all mediums of public communication and on our government bodies.

The club carrying strike breaker, and the placard carrying striker are both working class.  The soldier shooting into a crowd of striking steelworkers is most likely a child from that same class of exploited workers.

The radio, television, newspapers, and movies arm the public with ugly stereo types of the white working class and of the immigrant mexican working class.  If these two communities were allowed to organize without the interference from negative propaganda, they could form an alliance strong enough to challenge big business.  And "that" is where today's discussion should have started

Illegal immigrants are a tool used by corporatists to undermine the labor movement. But also, Oregon is an historically racist state.
