International debt- related issues and understanding the economic struggles of Africa in context

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod speak with Priva Hang'andu from Zambia. He is currently studying in Wisconsin and served as Programme Officer for Debt Issues with Jubilee Zambia.

Topics for discussion include Zambia's debt history, status and future; the impact of the global economic crises on Zambia; and understanding the economic struggles of Africa in context.

Priva Haang’andu, Programme Officer for Debt and Public Resource Monitoring at the Jesuit Centre
for Theological Reflection, 2008-2010, will speak at Portland State University and various community
locations, January 8-15, 2011. Priva has done extensive research on national and international debt-
related issues and was actively engaged in advocacy to improve borrowing and lending policies for both
Zambia and its lenders.

Priva has a BA with Honors in Philosophy and Humanities from the University of Zambia and is seeking
a MA in Political Science at Marquette University, Wisconsin. He has a Diploma in Philosophy and
Religious Education from St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Zambia. He is the author of numerous

Celeste Carey, More Talk Radio

Zambia has been very good to me. A visit there in 1991 changed my life. My only writing to make the best seller list was Tales of the Cha-Cha-Cha, about Zambia's unarmed revolution, preserved as Chapter 19 of Paul Loeb's The Impossible Will Take a Little While. I was Tour Director for Amayenge's USA tour and married for 12 years to Moye Kashimbe. Zambia has been very good to me.
In the early 90's I wrote a piece titled Jubilee 2000, which I shared with a listserve of Zambians living around the world. Since then I continue to encourage people to read the law of Jubilee in Leviticus 25. The world be well served to sound the trumpet and declare:

 • All prisoners are freed;
 • All debts are forgiven; and
 • Every person owns a home.

Please read my latest article on the Jubilee at http://progressiveblitz.blogspot.com/2011/01/jubilee.html. Thank you for bringing Mr. Haang’andu into this discussion.

Thank you for your remarks and your article.

Mr. Haang'andu will speak on Wednesday, January 12 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 NE Hancock, Portland at 7 pm. The event is free.
