MOTHERS NIGHT

It's KBOO's annual Mothers Day-weekend tradition! A veritable shmorgasbord of works by Frank Zappa's original band of lunatic geniuses, THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION! Join us for a 10 hour FREAK OUT this Friday night beginning at 8:00 PM and continuing til 6:00 AM! There will be lots of: rare performances, interviews, sing-a-longs, classic albums, worldwide tour confrontations and incidents, symphonic atrocities (Zubin Mehta?), our annual menu of goodies from Peter's UTILITY MUFFIN RESEARCH KITCHEN (for those who drop by the station to pay their pledge in person)--and special Mothers thank you gifts for those joining KBOO on MOTHERS NIGHT! Come by and have a Burnt Weeny Sandwich!

After growing up in Lancaster, CA and playing in various R&B bar bands in East LA, Frank Zappa formed the MOI (his friend Don Van Vliet becoming Capt. Beefheart and going in a direction much more DaDaist than the commercial pop culture was really ready for), and proceeded to confound or inspire the minds and record players of just about everyone listening around the world. Their first album, FREAK OUT! was a 2-record set -- nearly unheard of at the time! -- that most of us soon found in pawn shops for 50 cents. We will feature the early works of Zappa's long and storied career, spanning mostly the very productive years of around 1965 to the early 70s, but featuring interviews from throughout his life.
