Free Speech...would be a great idea...
“Steel barricade fencing now surrounds the Wayne Morse Free Speech Plaza outside the Lane County Courthouse — and will remain there until work crews “thoroughly clean” the public square that had been occupied earlier this week by a protest group.” The Associated Press knows how to sling a word or two…But news wire words are not free speech. We all pay for those words one way or another. Directly, in that if I want to use A/P words ‘straight no chaser’, I will get hit with a colossal fine. And, Yes, Virginia; they can find me. Then there are the subtle costs of doing business with the Business as Usual people: You will be spun. Your attention will be twisted until you only see what they feel it is safe for you to see. Yesterday afternoon, a band of Occupy Eugene folk and others hopped the barricades and confronted County Administrator Liane Richardson.
When the dust cleared only Alley Valkyrie was left standing – standing on the Free Speech Plaza, that is…and she was promptly handcuffed by Eugene police officers and led into the courthouse, where she was issued a citation for trespassing and then released.
Valkyrie, who has been one of the more visible members of Occupy Eugene during the past year, said while being taken into custody that she would contest the misdemeanor charge in court and that she believes the free speech plaza’s closure is unconstitutional.
Members of an Occupy Eugene offshoot known as SLEEPS (Safe Legally Entitled Emergency Places to Sleep) pitched more than a dozen tents in the plaza on Monday night in defiance of Eugene’s camping ban on public property.
Authorities closed the site down: “to ensure the health and safety and uninterrupted county operations.”
