No Child Left Behind Waivers

This is the first wave of dozens of state applications for waivers from the tough Bush-era education law, which requires all students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.

Of the eleven states that applied in this wave, ten were accepted: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

The one state that was denied, New Mexico, is still working with the administration to be approved down the line.

A second period of application is open currently, with twenty eight states expected to apply, and results expected in March or April.

Under the agreement to grant waivers, states must prove that they offer sufficient alternatives to No Child Left Behind requirements, guaranteeing adequate college and career preparation, setting new achievement targets, rewarding good schools and offering help to the worst off.

Obama's secretary of education Arne Duncan made a statement following Obama's announcement.
