This evening in southeast Portland, you’re invited to an evening of Palestinian hip-hop . Portland State University’s Middle East Studies Center Film Series will host a screening of the documentary film Slingshot Hip Hop, followed by a discussion with its director, Jackie Reem Salloum. The event starts at 5:30 at the Salmon Street Studio, at 109 SE Salmon St.

In other film-screening news, the University of Portland and the America21 Project will co-host a screening this evening of CNN’s controversial documentary Black in America: New Promised Land, Silicon Valley. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session focused on the development of an entrepreneurial ecosystem within urban sectors, especially in the Portland region. The event runs from 5:45 to 8:30 this evening in the Shiley Hall of Engineering boardroom at the University of Portland.

Also in North Portland this evening, the Center for Intercultural Organizing will host the latest in its series of First Friday gatherings. This evening will feature discussion on the recent wave of restrictive anti-immigrant laws across the country, with a special focus on the recent disaster passed in Alabama. A guest speaker will discuss organizing and advocacy in that state and ways that all of us can get involved to fight this unjust law. The event includes a potluck meal and runs from 6 to 9 pm at the CIO, up at 700 N Killingsworth.

And if all that wasn’t enough, tonight is also the night the Clowns Without Borders come to town to bring hilarious, cutting edge , family-friendly vaudeville, magic, music, and the best of Portland's thriving new circus scene. This benefit show will raise funds for Clowns Without Borders to send teaching and performing groups to Haiti over the next year to work with thousands of children living in tent camps, as well as working with teachers and camp leaders there.
