An Interview with Husein Abdulla, Dir. of Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain

Reports from across the Middle East explode across screens 24 hours a day, the infinite gyres upon gyres of the news cycle becoming ever bloodier as the circles widen.  For Americans still trying to remember which is which, Sunni? Shi-ite? It gets confusing fast and stays that way.  Within many of the countries engulfed in flames and the wrath of NATO, the local media is the last best resource.  Local papers are in many cases where foreign reporters start when they arrive in-country.  And so it is infuriating and troublesome to learn that Bahrain’s independent press fell silent last Sunday.

Print and online editions of Al Wasat were blocked as authorities reportedly accused the daily of fabricating news in its coverage of the widespread anti-government protest movement that rocked the country last month.   Al Jazeera reported that Al Wasat had been critical in its coverage of the state's response to the popular uprising. Security forces violently ousted demonstrators from Manama's Pearl Roundabout and allegedly open fire on peaceful marches.  As for the Al Wasat staff, we have good reason to fear The Bad…
