Queer Culture Radio focuses on the Transgender Week of Empowerment

Tonight's show focuses on the Transgender Week of Empowerment.

" I want all this because sex is good, because stereotypes deserve to be unmade, because connection dispels marginalization, because pleasure breeds happiness breeds joy. And who the hell wants to argue against joy in the face of an unjust world anyway? " and "It is not only in our personal relationships that we discover the emotional truths of oppression --truths that we never learn in books. It is in our personal relationships that we become motivated... So we become motivated to do many things for our lovers, to save them time, to bring them closer to us, to liberate them."

-     Diana Courvant Graham  from "Confluence and Sex"

Sasha and Dan open the show with Smitty Buckler, who is the Trans Resource Coordinator at the Queer Resource Center at Portland State.  Smitty discusses the pervasive and brutal violence directed toward Trans folk and the events surrounding Transgender Week of Empowerment.

Later, we play some audio from an interview with Tobi Hill-Meyer, who will be speaking and showing ze's film at the Candle Light Vigil that will take place on November 20th, the Transgender Day of Remembrance.  Tobi has been speaking publicly for eight years and is a film-maker, blogger, ziner and all around activist.

Dan and I rap up the program with some groundbreaking stories about openly Trans individuals breaking new ground.  We'll discuss the election of Victoria Kolakowski as the first federal openly Transgender judge to be elected, as well as Mye Allums, a basketball player, who became the first openly Transgender athlete in Division I athletics in the NCAA this week.
