1, On Saturday, December 20 at 4 PM, the Albina Ministerial Alliance for Justice and Police Reform will lead a Prayer Vigil and March through Northeast Portland in memory of Michael Brown, killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner, killed by a police chokehold in Staten Island, New York. In both cases, grand juries failed to bring indictment for their deaths. The Prayer Vigil and Rally will also honor Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice, a 12 year old shot by police in Cleveland, as well as Portland victims of police shootings and deadly force, including Kendra James (2003), James Jahar Perez (2004), James Chasse (2006), Aaron Campbell (2010), Keaton Otis (2010), Jose Mejia Poot (2001) and others. The theme of the Vigil and March is a Cry for Justice.
2,, Portland Rising Tide delivers ‘People’s Restraining Order’ to Kinder Morgan because In Solidarity We Trust! Monday a group of activists interrupted business as usual at the Vancouver office of Kinder Morgan to deliver a ‘People’s Restraining Order’ against the company’s plans to expand the Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline in British Columbia.
A representative from Kinder Morgan’s office tried to prevent protesters from entering the office by blocking the door. He refused to receive the ‘People’s Restraining Order,’ calling the peaceful gathering a major disruption.
The proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion would transport oil from the Alberta tar sands, and would travel through un-ceded Musqueam, Squamish, and Selilwitulh territories in British Columbia.
2, Dodd Frank, rein in the banks! On December 11, the House passed the 2015 federal budget (H.R. 83) by a vote of 219-206, appropriating more than $1 trillion for federal agencies. Buried in the 1,600 pages of the bill's text are hundreds of controversial provisions, known as "policy riders,". They are there for the benefit powerful industries. One of the most controversial provisions is a measure that was written by lobbyists for Citigroup. The provision rolls back part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that prohibits entities insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) from trading complicated financial devices known as custom swaps, a type of derivative. Just four banks, Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, control more than 90 percent of the banking industry's swaps market.
3, The U.S. Senate has voted 89-11 to approve the Defense Authorization Act of 2015, following the December 4 U.S.House of Representatives' 300-119 up-vote and now awaits President Barack Obama's signature. The 1,616-page piece of pork barrel legislation contains a provision — among other controversial measures — to streamline permitting for hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) on U.S. public lands overseen by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a unit of the U.S. Department of Interior.
4, California’s Diablo Canyon nuclear reactors are surrounded by earthquake faults they were never designed to withstand. They are riddled with design flaws and can’t meet basic fire safety standards. They dump huge quantities of hot water into the ocean in defiance of state water quality standards, killing billions of sea creatures. So the struggle continues. There is always a riddle to solve. always a war on the horizon....
