Solidarity with City Temps &  Colombian Injured Workers

One third of Portland City workers are "temps", with low pay, minimal benefits and no job security.  Hear testimony from temporary and seasonal workers at a recent Workers Rights Board hearing.

In the second half of the show, host John Walsh interviews Jorge Parra, leader of Colombian GM workers who have been injured on the job and summarily fired.  After a year's encampment outside the US Embassy, Parra is in the US seeking solidarity in their struggle for just compensation.

The Chicago Teachers Strike had ended two days prior, but a crowd of Portland teachers, parents, students and union activists rallied to draw the lessons of the strike, hearing from Adam Sanchez, Social Equality Educators; Kirstin Roberts, Chicago Teachers Union (by SKYPE); Susan Barrett, Oregon Save Our Schools; Margaret Butler, Portland Jobs with Justice, and others. Labor Radio’s Jamie Partridge recorded the rally.

ASOTRECOL Hits Two Year Mark in Their Huelga; Injured Colombian GM Workers Fight for Justice

At the beginning of August the Colombian autoworkers organized as ASOTRECOL, hurt on the job and then illegally kicked to the curb by General Motors, passed the two year mark in their continuous tent occupation in front of the US embassy in Bogotá. We called UAW retiree Frank Hammer, with them now, for a live update on what’s happening with the struggle in Colombia and solidarity in North America.

Bill Fletcher - How do we fight back in the age of Obama?

Bill Fletcher is a long-time racial justice, labor, and international activist, scholar, and author.  He has served in leadership positions with many prominent union and labor organizations, including the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union.  Fletcher is the immediate past president of TransAfrica Forum and is the coauthor, with Fernando Gapasin (heard here introducing Bill Fletcher), of Solidarity Divided: The Crisis in Organized Labor and a New Path Toward Social Justice.  Fletcher was in Northeast Portland, speaking at an event sponsored by the International Socialist Organization on May 18th, 2013 as part of a tour promoting his new book: "They're Bankrupting Us" and Twenty Other Myths about Unions.
