Indian Point Leak and Risk To Pipeline Project
On Saturday February 6th New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reported a serious leak of radioactive water from Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, New York.
Radioactive Tritium was found in groundwater testing wells near the plant. This news adds Indian Point facility to the growing list of northeast nuclear plants investigating leaks. Other plants also owned by energy giant Entergy, such as Vermont's Yankee and New York’s Fitzpatrick plants, have reported leaks for years.
Governor Cuomo has directed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to assess the risk to public safety. The Governor has not however expressed the same concern over a natural gas pipeline project moving forward near the nuclear facility.
For more on this KBOO’s Jared Dancler spoke with a member of an organization resisting the pipeline’s construction. Susan VanDolsen is with SAPE, Stop the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion.
We reached out to Spectra energy and they said there will be no impact to the construction of the pipeline because of the leak at Indian Point.
