In Summer of 2014 KBOO’s Co Station Manager Mic Crenshaw attended the Grassroots Radio Conference in Ames Iowa.

It was an awesome opportunity for Mic to mingle with over 100 other volunteers, DJ’s, staff, managers and supporters of community radio and low power FM stations across the country. Mic was invited specifically because of his role as a Hip Hop community member, Co-Manager of KBOO, and organizer within international Hip Hop circles. The organizers of GRC 2014 put out a national invitation to Hip Hop supporters, programmers and personnel involved in community radio to come to the conference in Ames and have a vocal presence at the gathering.

The call was answered by deejays from the Seattle area, Florida, Denver, Omaha, Rochester and other places in the U.S.

With so many people passionate about Hip Hop and community radio in one place, a Hip Hop conference within the larger GRC conference was organized and executed and the idea of the Grassroots Radio Conference Hip Hop Radio Union emerged, proposed by Luvva J, a DJ on Olympia Washington’s  KAOS 89.3 FM.

Some key issues were discussed and agreements made:

  • We had a comprehensive definition of what hip hop is and why some still associate it with gang violence, misogyny, and malt liquor

  • We cultivated a press list to keep in contact and share content with each other

  • We agreed to share programing schedules and promote each other

  • We committed  to go home to propagate network hip hop in our respective community broadcasts.

  • A national community radio group was established based on sharing music, radio shows, and preserving the culture thru community radio stations nationwide. We call it the Radio Union

  • We discussed why charting is important generally and important for the purpose of the Radio Union

KBOO is now a proud member of and  contributor to the GRC Hip Hop Radio Union.

Our localized contribution to this effort will involve equity work with Black and Brown youth and underserved populations through strengthening outreach, educational efforts including training and internships in technological skills of radio production, engineering, event production,  related to relative news and public affairs, music, arts culture and entertainment.

The GRC Hip-Hop Radio Union is the place to exchange Ideas, get feedback on your songs, get the info from Community Radio Station peeps from across the USA about how to get your music heard on a Nationwide level...

In the weeks and months since a website was created  (currently being renovated) along with a dropbox account for sharing content and a facebook page. Bi-monthly calls are held and Radio Union members are discussing strategies for supporting campaigns for emerging artists as well as cultural and political projects like “What The Bleep Happened to Hip Hop?” and the Afrikan Hip Hop Caravan.

An introductory letter was sent to urban programmers from KBOO and in the weeks to come a meeting to pull programmers together and discuss the collective potential of KBOO’s interaction with GRCHHRU will be organized.

Together WE CAN MAKE THE GRC HIP-HOP RADIO UNION GROW !!!!
